Ubuntu 21.10 Desktop

Open source is becoming the new standard and Ubuntu surpasses it, as the world’s most popular open source desktop operating system. Ubuntu 21.10 Desktop is the 25th version of Ubuntu since 2004. It is used on the largest public cloud enterprises and the smallest devices, on DGX servers and Windows WSL workstations alike. Ubuntu leverages innovative open source in a safe, secure, and reliable platform. Developers use Ubuntu to improve application security in low level programming. Ubuntu is the preferred production environment for sophisticated data and AI/ML workloads .

Ubuntu eliminates the challenge of open source image provenance as modern development practices increasingly depend on containerized images. Ubuntu provides safe, consistent, and trustworthy container images that are always reliably sourced.

The updated GUI includes out-of-the-box graphical applications support so Ubuntu desktop applications can be enjoyed without modification. It features a new horizontal workspace and application launcher.

Faster speed, lower memory utilization, and cloud native from the edge to the mainframe. Use Ubuntu 21.10 Desktop to optimize your AI/ML workloads on Kubernetes. NVIDIA adds a GPU operator to the growing MicroK8s community. It automates NVIDIA software components to provision GPU in your Kubernetes cluster. You can also share physical GPU between a guest VM and virtual GPU to maximize performance and efficiency further. A refreshed software stack, updated toolchain, and new Linux kernel are also included. Kubernetes are only a command away with MicroK8s on Ubuntu. Kubernetes edge cluster takes two commands. MicroK8s includes CNCF certified Kubernetes 1.22 in the stable channel and kata containers for improved secure deployment. DockerHub and ECR from Amazon’s Public Registry offers the Ubuntu 21.10 base OCI image. Canonical offers additional application images.

Cyber Security and DevOps benefit from IBM Z support for additional mainframe stability and security. IBM Z provides next-level data privacy and data security for hybrid multicloud solutions. Ubuntu 21.10 Desktop improves security awareness with the new PHP 8 and GCC 11. DevOps also benefit from Apache Cassandra in Ubuntu Desktop 21.10. It includes Prometheus integration, real-time scraping, and alerts. The new Firefox Snap by Mozilla adds another layer of security and gives you access to the latest and extended support browsers.
